A Closer Look at the Dental Implant Procedure
Dental implants are an excellent restorative solution for patients with missing teeth, or for those who have traditional dentures, and would like a more permanent and stable option. Dental implant procedures, performed by Dr. Philip V. Goduco at our Vernon Hills, IL, office, involves precise planning, preparation, and skill to achieve a successful outcome. Dr. Goduco will use advanced technologies to evaluate your oral health, and then use conservative placement methods to minimize the impact to your jaw. With an emphasis on patient education, we will make sure you understand exactly what to expect during every stage of treatment.
Stages of the Dental Implant Procedure
During your initial consultation with Dr. Goduco, he will thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, and jawbone, taking appropriate digital x-rays and scans to determine whether you have a strong and dense enough jawbone to support dental implants.
If Dr. Goduco discovers any conditions such as periodontal disease or tooth decay, these issues will need to be addressed before you can undergo dental implant surgery. Additionally, if you lack a sufficient amount or density of jawbone tissue, a bone graft can be performed to improve your eligibility for dental implants. Dr. Goduco can recommend any preliminary procedures and provide an estimate for the duration of your complete treatment timeline. He is able to complete all necessary preparatory treatment on-site, including socket preservation, bone grafts, and sinus lifts.
Dental Implant Surgery
Once you have healed from any preliminary treatment, we can schedule your dental implant surgery. After you have been made comfortable with local anesthesia and sedation, if needed, Dr. Goduco will create incisions in your gums to access the jaw. He will drill a small hole in the bone to accommodate each implant.
Dr. Goduco is able to complete all necessary preparatory treatment on-site, including socket preservation, bone grafts, and sinus lifts.
A surgical guide will be used to ensure your implants are embedded in the optimal locations to provide secure support to your final restoration, while also improving your oral health. Your incisions will be sutured closed and, depending on the location of the missing teeth, you may be provided with a temporary restoration. You will be provided with post-operative instructions at this time, which will contain directions such as eating a soft diet during your recovery.
Restoring the Implants
Once your implants have fully integrated with your jawbone, three to six months later, they will provide a stable and permanent foundation for your final restoration. Additional scans and impressions will be taken of your mouth to create your custom-fitted crown, bridge, or denture. In some cases, abutment pieces will be attached to the top of each implant post. Once your permanent restoration is ready, Dr. Goduco will ensure it fits comfortably and does not affect your bite.
