What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are custom-made shells of medical-grade ceramic that are affixed to the front of the teeth. Veneers can be used to mask a wide range of cosmetic imperfections such as chips or cracks, crooked teeth, small gaps, and stains that do not respond to professional teeth whitening treatments.
Although there are a variety of cosmetic options to choose from, porcelain veneers offer the most dramatic results.
Traditional veneers require the removal of a small amount of enamel, whereas minimal-prep veneers require little, if any, structure to be removed.
Determining Whether Veneers Are Right for You
If your teeth are discolored, chipped, cracked, crooked, gapped, misshapen, or uneven, you may be a candidate for porcelain veneers. To qualify for traditional veneers, you will need to have a sufficient amount of tooth enamel. If you lack sufficient enamel, you may be a candidate for minimal-prep veneers, however these can look bulky, so they many not be appropriate for everyone.
You must be in good periodontal health and be free of any cavities or other oral health conditions prior to cosmetic treatment. You should also be committed to regular check-ups and good oral hygiene. To achieve your desired results, you should come to your consultation with specific treatment goals in mind and realistic expectations.
What Can I Expect During My Procedure?
During your initial consultation with Dr. Goduco, he will thoroughly examine your teeth and gums, taking x-rays and scans as necessary. He will discuss your treatment options and goals with you. Once you decide that porcelain veneers are right for you, a very thin layer of enamel will then be removed from your teeth in preparation for your veneers. We will take impressions of your teeth, which will be sent to a dental lab where your custom veneers will be created. In most cases, you will be provided with temporary veneers at this time.
It will take roughly two weeks for your veneers to be created, during which time they will be precisely tailored to mimic your natural teeth for a seamless look. Once the restorations are ready, you will return to our office for Dr. Goduco to secure them in place.
First he will etch the surface of your teeth with a special solution, creating a slightly roughened surface for the veneers to adhere to. He will spread dental cement on the back of the veneers and then affix them to the front of your teeth with gentle pressure. A curing light will be used to harden the cement and Dr. Goduco will check your bite for proper alignment.
There is no downtime or recovery involved with porcelain veneers. Immediately following your appointment, you can expect to see a smile free of chips, cracks, and any other damage or flaws.
