Fall dental tips

fall
Fall is finally here and with fall comes lots of changes. During these times, schools may be in session or may be remote - between work, family, and school, there seems to be constant changes to keep up with. Cooler temperatures are coming our way, which means we get to spend a lot more time outside, which is especially good in our current environment.

Fall activities & food
There are many fall activities that are still able to take place, with some more precautions in place, and most of the fall activities involve food! There are apple cider donuts, apples fritters, corn on the cob, pumpkin pie, candy apples and many other types of desserts. This can make it more difficult to keep up with your good oral health routine, so it is important to make sure to stay on top of things. You can also try to stay away from the sweet treats that are really high in sugar, and choose a healthier option. For example, instead of a candy apple, you can eat a regular delicious apple instead.

It is not going to be possible to always brush your teeth after indulging in these sweet treats, but something you can do is at least rinse out your mouth with water. Most fall treats are extremely high in sugar, and you do not want that sugar to be sitting in your mouth for too long.

Halloween
Not only are fall festivals going on, but Halloween will be here before you know it! Although nobody is exactly sure what it will look like this year, one thing we know for sure is that candy will be a part of that day. Although it is okay to let yourself enjoy the holiday, make sure that you are still taking care of your teeth. Perhaps you can stay away from suckers and the gummy candies, as those tend to be worse for your teeth. Try to brush your teeth as soon as you can after eating candy.

Scheduling your routine dental appointment is a great idea for the fall. Summer and spring are the two seasons that are the busiest at the dentist, so fall might be a better choice if you are looking for more options and flexibility with scheduling. By scheduling during this season, you will have peace of mind that any dental procedures you might need are out of the way before the winter holidays roll around.

Check dental benefits
A final dental tip for the fall is to check on your dental insurance benefits and make sure that you have used them. Dental benefits do reset and it is easy to lose out on benefits that you have not used yet. If you have not had your annual x-rays, now would be the best time to call and schedule to have them. If you are unsure as to what your dental insurance benefits are, call your insurance company and then can run through the benefits you have for your specific plan.
