3 tips for healthy summer smiles

School is out, and summer is here - who is ready for some fun in the sun? While summer is the perfect time for family vacations and time with family and friends, it can also throw you off your normal dental routine. Here are three simple tips to prevent summertime tooth decay:
Keep a routine
Summer is the perfect time to stay up at night having fun - but it's important to not fall into the trap of skipping nighttime brushing, either for you or your children. Keeping kids on track with their twice a day brushing and flossing will keep them healthy and ready for back-to-school dental visits. Be sure to supervise brushing twice a day for two minutes - you can set a timer so you don't forget!
Avoid sugary drinks & snacks
With warmer temps, it's common to enjoy food and drinks that aren't in your normal routine, from sugary sports drinks and popcicles to soda and constant snacking from being at home all day. Choose a sugary drink as a special treat to have once in a while, not on a regular basis. Additionally, taking a break from snacking is good for your health - it allows your saliva to wash away any food and grow stronger.
Talk to your family and you can even make a chart out of healthy foods and what they do for your body!
Make your back-to-school dental visit early
Have you made your back-to-school appointments yet? Some schools require a dental visit for certain grades, so now is the right time to get your appointment on the books. For your convenience, we can schedule your twice yearly checkups at one time.
